The Edge’s ‘family-friendly’ development coming to Homewood this fall
The developers of a multi-use commercial dining and entertainment space in Homewood hope to have the project up and running by the end of the year.
J.J. and Whitney Thomas of Greensprings Development say The Edge, in the 800 block of Greensprings Highway, will create a “walkable, bikeable, strollable” outdoor entertainment area for all ages, J.J. Thomas said.
Construction has already started on the development, which could be turned over to tenants by early fall.
The architect is Black Design Architecture, while Wyatt Construction is the contractor. There will be about 7,000 square feet of leasable space for micro-restaurants, bars, retail and other food and beverage, and about 12,000 square feet of co-working space, Thomas said.
“We’re speaking to retailers that could be a good fit,” he said. “What we see is a gathering destination for all ages, with outdoor games and entertainment. Primarily, we want this to be a food and beverage destination with outdoor green space.”
Thomas said the couple kicked around the concept for more than a year, inspired by The Big Chill, formerly known as The Hub 30a of Watersound, Fla., and Birmingham’s Pizitz Food Hall. They’ve also received positive feedback from adjoining neighborhoods, he said.
“Our hope is that The Edge will provide people of all ages a place to gather with friends and family for food and drink, fellowship and fun,” Whitney Thomas said. “Whether it’s a family coming after practice, college students celebrating after a test or young parents taking a much-needed break out from the house, The Edge will provide that destination.”
