The challenge Georgia QB Carson Beck presents Alabama football defense
Alabama football defensive coordinator Kane Wommack knows he has his hands full with Georgia this weekend.
Specifically, quarterback Carson Beck.
“Carson Beck, is as good as it comes in college football right now,” Wommack said Monday.
No. 4 Alabama is set to face No. 1/2 Georgia on Saturday (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC) at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Wommack is tasked with slowing down Beck and company.
Although the Georgia offense didn’t fare all that well in its last game, a 13-12 victory vs. the Wildcats on the road, the offense presents plenty of threats. Beck, a preseason All-America selection, sits at the top of the list.
“Incredibly efficient with his decision-making,” Wommack said. “Does not take many sacks. Rarely turns the ball over. Takes care of the football. I think he does a really tremendous job in the intermediate throwing game. He has great accuracy. Really quick release, great decision-maker. Just so impressed by him the more I watch — and I’ve probably watched every game from the last couple of years here.”
A season ago, Beck faced the Crimson Tide defense in the SEC Championship Game and went 21-for-29 (72.4%) for 243 yards with no touchdowns but no interceptions. He rushed for a touchdown, though.
In 2024, Beck has completed 56 of 82 passes (68.3%) for 680 yards and seven touchdowns. Beck has yet to throw an interception. He also has been sacked only once.
“As an offense, they do a really good job of minimizing the risk for their quarterback,” Wommack said. “They get the ball out of their hand, they try to establish the run, they get the ball on the perimeter early. They will take shots, and they’ll take shots early in the game, but you’ve got to find that fine balance of playing good, sound coverage, and also make it so that the quarterback doesn’t feel like he can sit in the pocket and pick you apart with long developing plays in the passing game.”
Wommack said Beck is “incredibly accurate” at all levels of the field. The Alabama coordinator called Beck a complete quarterback.
“He’s really as good as I’ve seen in the last couple of years,” Wommack said. “I think, for us, we have to be mindful of making him uncomfortable, but you want to make sure you’re not sacrificing things from a coverage perspective in order to get that done.”
