Texas Tech has the rare opportunity of beating Texas in back-to-back seasons, which last happened in 1997 and 1998. Doing so would give Red Raiders fans major bragging rights, as conference realignment makes it unclear when the teams will face off next.

College Football Week 13 Texas Tech vs. Texas odds outlook

Each team heads into the Battle for the Chancellor’s Spurs on winning streaks: three straight for Texas Tech and five in a row for Texas. However, the teams have far different postseason aspirations.

The Longhorns hope its lone defeat to Oklahoma won’t keep them out of the College Football Playoff, while the Red Raiders earned bowl eligibility in last week’s victory against UCF.

This game was shaping up to feature two of the best running backs in college football until Jonathon Brooks’ season was cut short due to a torn ACL in Week 11. Brooks’ 1,139 rushing yards are the eighth most in P5, even with the sophomore playing only 10 games.

CJ Baxter stepped up for the Longhorns in the first game without Jonathon, rushing for 117 yards in a 26-16 win over Iowa State.

Fans will still be treated to Doak Walker Award finalist Tahj Brooks, who has rushed for the second-most yards in the nation. Tahj is having an unbelievable senior campaign, eclipsing 100 yards in all but three Texas Tech games.

Texas Tech vs. Texas best bets and odds: Texas Tech +14 (-112 or better)

The Longhorns have dominated this rivalry since the first meeting in 1928, holding a 54-18 record vs. the Red Raiders. While we expect Texas to reclaim the Chancellor’s Spurs, it won’t come easy.

Many of the top teams in the nation have rounded into form in the finals weeks of the regular season, but not Texas. Three of the Longhorns’ last five wins have come by seven points or less, and UT has faced just one ranked foe in that span.

Texas Tech upped its game against top-tier opponents, losing to No. 13 Oregon by eight points and upsetting No. 16 Kansas on the road.

Texas Tech vs. Texas best bets and odds: Tahj Brooks under 101.5 rushing yards (-115 or better)

Tahj has his toughest test of the season against a Texas defense that allows an anemic 82 rushing yards per game, ranking fifth-best in FBS. Conversely, the Longhorns’ passing defense has been below average, allowing 252 yards per week.

In a similar matchup against an Oregon defense that allows the 11th-fewest rushing yards in the nation, Tahj had a rough go of it, earning just 71 yards.

If Texas Tech is going to pull the upset, it’ll be thanks to a stellar performance from quarterback Behren Morton.
