Texas man ID’d as suspect killed in shootout with Alabama State Troopers during I-65 chase

Authorities have released the name of a man killed in an exchange of gunfire with Alabama State Troopers during a three-county police chase.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Friday identified the slain man as Isaias Garcia. He was 35 and lived in Texas.

The incident began just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday when authorities said troopers initiated a traffic stop on a stolen 2018 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck in Autauga County.

Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett said the driver of the Dodge Ram – now identified as Garcia – attempted to elude troopers and the chase was on.

During the pursuit, Burkett said, Garcia caused two traffic crashes in Elmore County before wrecking and overturning near the 173-mile marker in Montgomery County.

Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene. His passenger, 46-year-old Terrell Dry Jr., of Palmetto, Ga., was injured and taken to Baptist Medical Center South for treatment.

No officers were injured. The entire ordeal lasted about 12 minutes.

During the chase, Burkett said, Garcia struck a pickup truck driven by 63-year-old David G. Vaughn of Deatsville. Vaughn also was injured and taken to Baptist Medical Center South.

Also during the pursuit, authorities said, Garcia struck a Hyundai Tuscon driven by Ashley L. Ofield, 38, of Millbrook. Ofield was not injured.

Burkett said the investigation is ongoing and, once complete, will be turned over to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
