Tex-Mex restaurant chain files for bankruptcy
Citing inflation and changing customer behavior, a popular Tex-Mex restaurant chain has filed for bankruptcy protection.
Atlanta-based On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina filed Tuesday in federal bankruptcy court in northern Georgia. The chain, which closed 40 locations last year, operates 60 restaurants in 18 states and those will remain open during the bankruptcy process. Franchisees run an additional 20 restaurants in the U.S. and South Korea, according to the company.
On The Border previously had a location at The Summit in Birmingham, but it has closed.
RestaurantBusinessOnline reported court filings showed On The Border’s assets and liabilities between $10 million and $50 million. The chain is owned by Argonne Capital Group, which also operates Applebee’s, IHOP and Wingstop, as well as Planet Fitness and other franchises.
On The Border is the latest fast-casual chain to file for bankruptcy in the past year, joining Red Lobster, TGI Fridays and Buca di Beppo.
