Terry Saban confirms Nick Saban’s retirement through social media post

Terry Saban confirmed that her husband, Nick Saban, will retire from his role as head football coach at the University of Alabama.

Miss Terry, as she’s affectionately known in Tuscaloosa, released a statement through the Nick’s Kids Foundation Facebook page.

“It has been an incredible run these last 17 years at the University of Alabama and we take with us many amazing memories. We hope that the Saban legacy will be about helping others and making a positive difference in people’s lives as well as the winning tradition on the field. Our Nick’s Kids Foundation will continue to help children, student, and teacher causes in the State of Alabama.

“The rules for the game of football may change, but the ‘process’ will never go out of style: hard work, discipline, the relentless pursuit of a worthy goal, not cutting corners, and doing things the right way for the sake of constant personal improvement, not for the scoreboard. Alabama will always feel like ‘Sweet Home’ to our family, and we’ll be cheering ‘Roll Tide’!”

After arriving in 2007, Saban reinvigorated a powerhouse in Tuscaloosa, capturing six national titles and branding UA as a hub for NFL talent. Seventeen seasons and 206 wins later, Saban will be remembered for his dominance and consistency, helping bring his final team this fall from 1-1 to within one play of another championship appearance.

Saban’s retirement had been speculated throughout the year, but the coach avoided the topic in the locker room following the loss to Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Players were reportedly informed of the decision on Wednesday night, according to multiple reports.

JC Latham and Terrion Arnold, who had both already declared for the NFL Draft, tweeted out their messages hailing Saban as the “GOAT” or greatest of all time.

Saban’s contract, set to pay him more than $11 million annually, runs through 2030. The University has yet to release a statement, instead letting the news of the offseason break on social media. But, with Terry’s confirmation, it’s official that the Saban’s have moved on to their future endeavors.

The Nick’s Kids Foundation has been a staple in Tuscaloosa, helping generate $12 million for local charity efforts. When the 2011 tornado ravaged Tuscaloosa, the Foundation began building homes for each national championship won. Over the years, 20 homes have been built, in addition to hundreds of thousands awarded to local teachers during games in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
