Terrion Arnold signs first contract, throws first pitch on same day

Former Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold signed his first NFL contract on Thursday with the Detroit Lions, then went to Comerica Park to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Detroit Tigers’ interleague game against the Washington Nationals.

The Lions chose Arnold from the Crimson Tide with the 24th selection in the NFL Draft on April 25.

That draft slot comes with a fully guaranteed, four-year contract worth about $14.344 million, including a $7.252 million signing bonus.

Detroit chose Arnold after sending the 29th and 73rd picks in the 2024 NFL Draft to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for the ability to move up five spots in the first round and a 2025 seventh-round selection.

All drafted players receive four-year contracts. The values of those contracts are based on the pick number, the NFL’s salary cap of $255.4 million for the 2024 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

As a first-round choice, Arnold’s contract also contains a team option for a fifth season.

Detroit did not re-sign its top two corners from last season – Cameron Sutton and Jerry Jacobs. In March, the Lions traded for former Auburn standout Carlton Davis, a six-year starter at cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and signed cornerback Amik Robertson as a free agent after he started 12 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. After drafting Arnold, the Lions used their second-round pick on Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr.

Holdover cornerbacks Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey started two games apiece last season, and former Alabama standout Brian Branch is back for a second season after excelling in multiple roles, including slot corner, for Detroit as a rookie.

Arnold signed on the day after the Lions concluded their offseason program. The full team won’t be together again until it convenes for training camp late next month.

After becoming the final Detroit draft choice to sign his contract, Arnold accompanied the Lions’ other rookies to Comerica Park, where, as the NFL team’s first-round choice in the 2024 draft, he tossed the first pitch.

Casey Mize pitched the first six innings for the Tigers on Thursday, yielding one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four. A former Springville High School and Auburn standout, Mize was the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft.
