Tennessee Titans releasing Pro Bowl center

Tennessee Titans releasing Pro Bowl center

Tennessee Titans center Ben Jones received his first invitation to the Pro Bowl Games to cap his 11th NFL season.

But one month later with one season left on a two-year, $14 million contract extension that kept Jones out of free agency last offseason, the Titans are parting ways with the former Bibb County High School standout, NFL Network and atozsports.com reported on Friday.

Jones was given the option to retire before being released, atozsports.com reported.

Jones was scheduled to count $8.293 million against the Titans’ salary cap in 2023. Tennessee will trim $3.707 million off that number by releasing Jones.

The center will be the fifth player released by Tennessee this offseason, following kicker Randy Bullock, linebacker and former Pinson Valley High School standout Zach Cunningham, offensive tackle Taylor Lewan and wide receiver Robert Woods.

Jones joined the Titans in free agency in 2016 after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Houston Texans.

In his first 10 NFL seasons, Jones missed one game. In 2022, a concussion and other injuries sidelined him for five games.

During a media appearance at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, new Tennessee general manager Ran Carthon was asked about Jones’ health and how he fit with the Titans’ 2023 plans.

“Ben’s healthy,” Carthon said. “I think Ben’s an older player, and he’s still working through some things, so with Ben, Ben’s a pro. He’s a pro’s pro, and so we’re going to continue to let him get healthy and go from there.”
