Tennessee picked to win SEC men’s basketball championship

Tennessee is the media’s pick to win the 2023-24 SEC men’s basketball championship, according to voting by SEC and national reporters released Tuesday.

The Volunteers, who went 25-11 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament last year, were picked ahead of Texas A&M, Arkansas, Kentucky and Alabama. Auburn was chosen sixth, followed by Mississippi State, Florida, Missouri, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Georgia, LSU and South Carolina.

Texas A&M guard Wade Taylor was chosen as Preseason SEC Player of the Year. The 6-foot junior from Dallas averaged 16.5 points and 3.9 assists per game last season, and led the conference with a free-throw percentage of 87.9.

Taylor is joined on the All-SEC first team by Alabama’s Grant Nelson, Arkansas’ Trevon Brazile, Auburn’s Johni Broome, Mississippi State’s Tolu Smith, Tennessee’s Santiago Vescovi and Kentucky’s Justin Edwards.

Second-team picks were Alabama’s Mark Sears, Florida’s Riley Kugel, Arkansas’s Davonte Davis, Kentucky’s Antonio Reeves and Tennessee’s Zakai Zeigler.
