Tennessee lineman helping repair Alabama storm damage killed by suspected DUI driver

A 49-year-old lineman from Tennessee has died after he was hit by a drunk driver while in Alabama working on storm repairs and cleanup.

Thomas Dewayne “Drew” Ferrell, 49, died Tuesday at UAB Hospital, said Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy.

The crash happened Sunday, March 16.

Authorities said Ferrell, who worked for ARTIS Power construction, was working on power lines at the intersection of Ashland Highway/Mount Olive Circle and Mountain View Road when he was hit.

Police told the Anniston Star that Ferrell, of Cottonwood, Tenn., was walking across Ashland Highway in a fluorescent green safety jacket when he was hit by a 1995 Nissan pickup, driven by 45-year-old Miguel Manzano-Martinez of Talladega.

Witnesses say Martinez was passing cars and driving erratically before Ferrell was hit.

Court records show Martinez is charged with first-degree assault and driving under the influence. Those charges could be upgraded following Ferrell’s death.

He remains held in the Talladega County Jail on $50,000 bond.

His first court date is set for next month.
