Telecommunications giant laying off 73 in Alabama’s largest city

AT&T has announced it plans to lay off 73 employees in Huntsville later this year.

In a notice posted on the Alabama Department of Commerce’s WARN List, the company announced it plans to begin the reductions on Sept. 20.

An AT&T spokesperson said eligible employees affected will receive severance pay, benefits and outplacement services.

“We’re undergoing targeted workforce reductions and focusing on growth areas as part of our regular review of operations to ensure we have the right level of support where needed,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“Reducing our workforce is a difficult decision that we don’t take lightly. We make every effort to do this through attrition, voluntary departures, and reskilling efforts, but there are times like this when additional reductions are necessary. For eligible employees affected by these changes, we will provide severance pay, benefits and outplacement services.”

According to the company, AT&T spent the previous four years investing more than $2.7 billion into its network infrastructure, including almost $900 million in the Birmingham-Hoover area and $175 million in Huntsville.
