Teens plead guilty in Brian Robinson Jr. shooting

The two teens arrested for the attempted robbery during which Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot have pleaded guilty.

On Monday in D.C. Superior Court, the Washington Post reported, a 15-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted robbery in the Aug. 28 incident involving Robinson and voluntary manslaughter in the Oct. 3 shooting death of another 15-year-old. Law-enforcement authorities said the teen used the same gun in the Robinson holdup and the fatal shooting.

On Jan. 13 in D.C. Superior Court, the Washington Post reported, a 17-year-old pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a pistol without a license in the Aug. 28 incident.

A few new details about Robinson’s shooting were shared during the court proceedings.

Robinson was walking to his car on H Street NE in Washington around 6 p.m. Aug. 28 when two teens tried to rob him of his wallet and the keys to his Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

When one of the teens approached him and pulled out a gun, Robinson started to run. When the 17-year-old tried to stop him, Robinson wrested the gun out of the teen’s hands, then was shot by the 15-year-old just above the knee and in the hip before the boys ran away.

Prosecutors matched the 17-year-old’s DNA to the Glock .33-caliber taken from the teen by Robinson. The 17-year-old was arrested on Nov. 1, with the 15-year-old arrested on Nov. 4. The suspects were 16 and 14 years old at the time Robinson was shot.

Robinson’s wounds caused him to miss the first four games of the season after he joined the Commanders from Alabama in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He rebounded to lead Washington in rushing yards this season.

Robinson made his NFL debut on Oct. 9 with 22 yards on nine carries in a 21-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Four days later, Robinson’s first touchdown on a 1-yard run lifted the Commanders to a 12-7 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Robinson ran for 86 yards and a touchdown as Washington became the first team to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2022 season with a 32-21 win on Nov. 14, and two weeks later, he recorded his first 100-yard game and caught his first TD pass in a 19-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Robinson missed Washington’s regular-season finale with a knee injury. While playing in 12 of the Commanders’ 17 games, Robinson led the team with 797 yards and two touchdowns on 205 rushing attempts. He also caught nine passes for 60 yards and one touchdown.

Both teens will be sentenced by Judge Robert A. Salerno – the 17-year-old on Feb. 24 and the 15-year-old on March 8.

The Washington Post reported the 17-year-old’s guilty plea was part of an agreement in which prosecutors would ask the teen to be committed to the custody of the District of Columbia’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services until he turns 20, although the judge could add up to a year to that agreement. The teen currently is under GPS-monitored 24-hour confinement at his parents’ home.

Salerno also could sentence the 15-year-old to remain in the custody of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services until he is 21 years old. The prosecution requested the judge keep the teen in custody until the sentencing.

A prep standout at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Robinson ran for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught 35 passes for 296 yards for Alabama during the 2021 season.
