Teen suspect arrested in attempted murder of Alabama police officer
A teenager accused of shooting at an Alabama police officer in January has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident, authorities said Tuesday.
Tyree Strong Jr., 19, who was wanted in the attempted murder of a Selma police officer on Jan. 29, was arrested Feb. 15. by the U.S. Marshals-Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force in Tuscaloosa, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Tuesday.
ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation started the probe into the attempted killing of the officer at the request of Interim Selma Police Chief Tommie Reese, said Cpl. Reginal King of ALEA.
The officer was sitting in his patrol vehicle at the intersection of Marie Foster Street and J L Chestnut Boulevard when two people approached his patrol vehicle, King said.
One suspect — later identified as Strong — fired a handgun into the vehicle and struck the driver-side door, where the officer was sitting.
The officer was not injured.
Both suspect then fled on foot.
SBI special agents obtained warrants for Strong for attempted murder and discharging a firearm into the patrol vehicle, King said.
“Although ALEA does not condone assaults or threats of violence against any citizen, violent actions taken against law enforcement will absolutely not be tolerated and will be vigorously investigated. In this case ALEA used all available resources and worked side by side with local, state, and federal partners to bring Strong to justice,” the agency said in a statement. “ALEA will continue to aggressively investigate any case involving assaults or violence against law enforcement.”
Along with ALEA and the U.S. Marshals-Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Selma Police Department, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
