Teen is 5th suspect charged in livestreamed killing of Birmingham mother Asia Poole
A fifth person has been charged in last week’s deadly shooting at a Birmingham apartment complex that was captured live in Facebook videos.
A 17-year-old male was taken into custody Wednesday in connection with the slaying of a 21-year- old Asia Alyce Poole. He is the fifth charged in the case, but the fourth to be charged with murder.
His name is not being released because of his age. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
The others charged with murder are Aacoreyah Denae Woods, 20, who was arrested Tuesday, and Justin Jamond Hendrix, 20, and Taylor McCloud, 22, who were taken into custody last week.
Janiyah Hendrix, 19, who was fighting with Poole before the shots rang out, is charged with first-degree auto theft after authorities say she fled the chaotic scene in Poole’s co.
Janiyah Hendrix and Justin Hendrix are siblings. Their father was shot to death in 2022 when he stopped at a Homewood ATM on his way home from church.
Poole’s acquaintances said there was an ongoing dispute between her and Janiyah Hendrix over a man.
It culminated Aug. 20 when the two women got into a fight in the parking lot.
The fight escalated into a brawl and a shootout at the Monarch Ridge apartment complex on Gallant Drive, which was formerly known as Valley Brook.
The video showed Poole in a brawl that began with Janiyah Hendrix and later involved multiple people.
It appeared to start near Poole’s vehicle in the parking lot and then moved to a breezeway in one of the apartment buildings before a hail of gunfire erupted.
The fight and subsequent shooting were captured on Facebook live videos. Police collected 168 shell casings.
Poole was pronounced dead on the scene. Her best friend was shot in the hip but survived.
Poole, a Monarch Ridge resident, left behind a daughter who started pre-kindergarten this week. The child’s 21-year-old father died on July 26.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police ask anyone with information or additional videos of the incident to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
