Teen girl fatally struck at Alabama bus stop âbrought so much joyâ: fund set up for family
A Blount County teen struck and killed while at a bus stop is being remembered as beautiful, kind and loving.
Carmen Lopez, a 15-year-old student at Appalachian School, died Thursday morning as she was preparing to get onto the school bus at the stop in front of her home.
“She has brought so much joy to those around her in her short life,’’ according to a Facebook post by Allman Farms & Orchards, where one of Lopez’s parents works. “Devastated just does not seem to be the right words to describe the feelings of so many this evening.”
The crash happened just after 7 a.m. on U.S. 231 near the TipTop One Stop in St. Clair County. That location is on the Blount County and St. Clair County lines.
Carmen and her siblings were about to get onto the school bus when she was hit by a pickup truck.
The 2004 Nissan Frontier, driven by 31-year-old Tyler Gillilan of Oneonta, then crashed into the house.
Carmen was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:58 a.m., said St. Clair County Deputy Coroner Joe Sweatt.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including Blount and St. Clair sheriff’s deputies, and the Alabama State Troopers. The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene.
Rodney Green, Superintendent, Blount County Schools Superintendent Rodney Green released a statement Thursday afternoon.
“It is with a heavy and broken heart that we share the news of a devastating, tragic accident at a bus- stop this morning that took the life of one of our students at Appalachian School,’’ Green said. “This is certainly one of the most difficult things that our school and our community have had to face. Appalachian School is a close-knit community school that loves and supports its students, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them.”
“I want to thank our first responders, our community members, counselors and employees for their assistance with the families involved and with our students impacted at the school,’’ Green said. “Thanks for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support for the family, our school, and our community and please remember them in the difficult days ahead.”
