Teen critically wounded in Hoover shooting a victim of mistaken identity; 2 jailed, police say
Two Birmingham men have been charged in the Hoover shooting of a 16-year-old boy who police believe was a victim of mistaken identity.
Marlon Kentral Williams, 21, and Bryan DeCarlos Mills Jr., 25, are charged with attempted murder, Hoover police announced Tuesday. Bond is set at $200,000 each.
The victim remains in critical but stable condition at UAB Hospital after being shot multiple times.
The shooting happened about 7:15 a.m. Monday.
Officers responded to The Benton Apartments on Primm Lane after receiving several 911 calls reporting shots fired.
Lt. Daniel Lowe said the 16-year-old was sitting inside his vehicle waiting for his family to drive him to school when the two suspects approached the vehicle and opened fire.
Two other people, Lowe said, came out of an apartment and fired several rounds at the suspects, who fled in a vehicle. The men who shot at the suspects were detained at the scene and held for questioning.
Shortly before 8 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office notified Hoover police that a man – now identified Mills – showed up at the McAdory Fire Department with a gunshot wound.
He was taken to an undisclosed hospital where he is in stable condition.
Lowe said investigators quickly determined Mills was one of the suspects in the teen’s shooting. The other suspect – Williams – had driven his injured friend to the fire station, Lowe said.
The pair was in a vehicle stolen out of Hoover four months ago.
The two men who returned fire have been released and are not being charged at this time.
“Detectives have not located any evidence to suggest the victim was involved in any activity which led to this shooting,’’ Lowe said, “and believe he was mistakenly identified as someone else the suspects may have been targeting.”
The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges against both suspects are expected.
