Teen charged with reckless manslaughter in shooting of 22-year-old in east Birmingham

A juvenile has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting outside an east Birmingham home.

The 17-year-old’s name is not being released because of his age.

He is charged with reckless manslaughter in the Wednesday-afternoon shooting death of Tadarrien Griffin, 22.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 100 block of 71st Street North. That location was in front of one of the houses nearest to Wahouma Park.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said East Precinct officers arrived on the scene to find Griffin unresponsive outside of a vehicle. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

The juvenile remained on the scene. He was taken into custody for questioning and then booked into the Birmingham City Jail.

Detectives presented their evidence to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office Thursday, which issued the reckless manslaughter warrant.

The teen and the victim knew each other and apparently were outside together when the fatal shooting happened.

After warrants were issued, the teen was transported to the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $30,000.
