Teen charged with killing man found dead in burning Jefferson County home

A male found dead inside a burning Jefferson County home was the victim of homicide, and a north Alabama teen has now been charged.

Jose Antonio Alvarado, an 18-year-old with an address listed in Elkmont, is charged with murder and second-degree arson, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.

The victim has still not yet been identified, according to sheriff’s and Jefferson County Coroner’s Office officials.

Graysville and Adamsville firefighters were dispatched Sunday night to a house in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue S.W. in Graysville on a report of a house fire.

The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m.

Sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby said first responders arrived to find the house engulfed in flames.

Once the blaze was extinguished, a male was found inside. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:17 p.m.

Sheriff’s detectives responded to the house, along with the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Additional details of the investigation have not been released, including how the unidentified victim was killed.

Irby said Alvarado was taken into custody Thursday. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 6:05 p.m. and remains held without bond.

The victim is the 48th homicide countywide so far this year.
