Teen charged in fatal shooting of 51-year-old man in Birmingham

A 19-year-old has been charged in the Thursday shooting death of a man in Birmingham’s Smithfield community.

Police on Saturday announced the arrest of Michael Bruce Holly. He is charged with murder in the slaying of 51-year-old Reginald Tolbert.

The deadly shooting happened at 6:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Second Avenue North.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said officers arrived the location to find Tolbert unresponsive in an abandoned building. He was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:59 p.m.

Wade said Tolbert and Holly were acquaintances. Holly approached the victim, began a verbal argument, shot Tolbert and then fled the scene.

Patrol officers quickly took Holly into custody.

He was held in the Birmingham City Jail until formal warrants were obtained Friday and then booked into the Jefferson County Jail just before 5:30 p.m. Friday.

He is being held without bond.

Tolbert is Birmingham 103rd homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 145 homicides including the 103 in Birmingham.
