Teen charged after dispute led to fatal shooting of Jeffco father; toddler son critically injured
A 19-year-old is being held without bond after authorities say he fatally shot a Jefferson County man and critically wounded one of the man’s children.
Adaryon Coachman is charged with capital murder in the slaying of the victim, whose identity has not yet been released. Coachman is charged with first-degree assault in the shooting of the homicide victim’s 1-year-old son.
The charge is a capital crime because the victim was killed in front of his children.
The gunfire erupted just before 2 p.m. Saturday in the public housing community in the 7800 block of Wisdom Way in northeastern Jefferson County.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched on a report of multiple people shot, said Lt. Joni Money.
They arrived to find the 34-year-old father dead and his young son injured. Both had been shot multiple times.
The child was taken to Children’s of Alabama where he was last listed in critical, but stable, condition.
Money said the investigation shows there had been an ongoing neighborhood dispute that resulted in an argument Saturday afternoon. Coachman, Money said, pulled a gun and fired numerous shots at the adult victim, also striking the child.
Investigators marked multiple shell casings just outside an apartment unit, feet away from the housing community’s playground.
Coachman was quickly taken into custody. Under Aniah’s Law, he is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
