Teen attempted murder suspect crashes into ATM during police chase
An early-morning chase in western Jefferson County led to the arrest of an 18-year-old wanted on shooting charges.
Just after 6 a.m. Saturday, sheriff’s deputies were alerted to several people driving through a neighborhood near Big Sky Cove in McCalla, said Lt. Joni Money. The caller told dispatchers the males were breaking into vehicles and provided a description of them.
Deputies about five minutes later spotted the suspect vehicle — a Ford F-150 — and tried to make a stop.
The driver, Money said, did not stop and a pursuit ensued.
During the chase, the driver attempted to maneuver through the drive-thru at the Wells Fargo Bank on Bessemer Road but lost control and crashed into the ATM.
The driver – 18-year-old Isiah Dewayne Coleman – and two juveniles were taken into custody.
Money said deputies determined Coleman had outstanding warrants charging him with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied building for a Sept. 2 shooting in Fairfield. The victim in that case suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Coleman is now also charged with receiving stolen property and attempting to elude.
He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 7:51 a.m. and remains held on bonds totaling $108,000.
