Teen arrested in shooting of juvenile in Gulf Shores during spring break

A teenage suspect was arrested and charged with assault in connection with the shooting that injured a juvenile during spring break in Gulf Shores, police said Wednesday.

Gregory D. Tate, III, 18, of Bay Minette, was arrested on assault charges, Gulf Shores police said.

Police received reports of shots fired about 8:40 p.m. March 27 in the 100 block of Gulf Shores Parkway near the intersection of Highway 59 and East Beach Boulevard.

A juvenile male victim was found shot at the scene, police said.

Gulf Shores police detectives, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office and Bay Minette police worked to identify the suspect responsible for the shooting.

An arrest warrant was issued for Tate on Tuesday. He was charged with assault for his role in the shooting.

“The City of Gulf Shores is a family-oriented beach community focused on providing a safe and positive environment for everyone to enjoy,” the department said on social media.

“The Mayor, City Council and the residents of Gulf Shores have empowered the police department to aggressively use all law enforcement resources at their disposal to identify, apprehend and seek prosecution for persons who have no regard for the sanctity of life and through their callous actions create a risk injury or death to others within our city,” the statement continued.

“We will continue to focus additional resources at the beachfront and to take pro-active measures to emphasize safety for our residents and visitors.”

Police said earlier that Tate tried to flee from officers by attempting to break into cars.

The shooting occurred exactly a year after a similar incident during spring break 2023 in Gulf Shores that also injured a juvenile.

Grant Brown, public information officer for the city of Gulf Shores, told AL.com shortly after the shooting that the victim had been treated and released.

Police said the shooting appeared to stem from an ongoing dispute between two groups from Bay Minette who were in Gulf Shores on the night of the shooting.

The shooting was not far from The Hangout.

“Suspect(s) and victim(s) were not at The Hangout. All Hangout patrons are safe, and we await further details from the GSPD,” The Hangout posted on social media.

It was not clear how many shots were fired but Brown said three shell-casings were recovered from the scene.

“It’s a very isolated event,” Brown said. “We have a significantly strong security force with our police department. We’re a very family friendly destination. We’re blessed. We very seldom, if ever, have situations like this.”
