TCU rallies past Notre Dame to advance to program’s first Elite Eight
Another game won means more history for Mark Campbell’s TCU women’s basketball team.
The Horned Frogs advanced to the program’s first Elite Eight with a 71-62 victory over Notre Dame, backed by a dominant fourth-quarter effort.
With the victory, they’ll face either Texas or Tennessee in the Elite Eight on Monday in Birmingham.
TCU outscored the Fighting Irish 20-10 in the fourth, backed by a 26-point performance from star Hailey Van Lith; she scored 12 of TCU’s 20 fourth-quarter points and totaled 9 rebounds as well.
The team combined to shoot 60% from the field in the fourth quarter and knocked down two of their three 3-point baskets.
“That game was unbelievable,” Campbell said. “That’s what March Madness is all about. I thank the good Lord for these three right here. How each of them ended up here and I’ll take that trio against anybody in college basketball.
“This was an amazing team effort, incredible defensive effort. The fight and spirit that this group showed in the second half is what you have to do to win in March.”
Saturday’s matchup alluded to TCU’s early-season matchup against Notre Dame in the Cayman Islands, when the Horned Frogs outscored Notre Dame 31-12 in the fourth to seal a 76-68 win in the November showdown.
Campbell credited the team’s leadership and mindset to not only being able to secure Saturday’s win, but also the rest of the victories put together following the regular season.
“It’s an incredible ride that we’ve been on and it’s a testament to these young women in the locker room,” he said. “These three get a lot of attention, and well-deserved, but we’re at this point because of the group that’s in the locker room. There really is a sisterhood. There’s a unique blend of talents and personalities that have come from a lot of different backgrounds, which is what makes us so fun. So they thrive — some people are nervous when they step into these stages.
“To win a Big 12 Championship we had to win in Waco against your rival who you hadn’t beaten in 35 years. This group embraced it. When you go to the Big 12 Tournament and you have never won one in school history, this group doesn’t flinch. There is no fear.”
Sedona Prince finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds in the victory for TCU, aided by her 11-for-12 night from the free throw line; she was joined in double figures by Madison Conner, who had 13 points.
Agnes Emma-Nnopu added 7 points and 7 rebounds.
“This is the tightest-knit group you could get in college athletics. It’s so unique,” Conner said. “We are all from different places. We have a whole bunch of people who just came here for one year, and me and Sedona were teammates last year, and I think we love each other.”
“Practice is fun every single day. Sometimes it might be difficult but at the end of the practice we’re all happy to be around each other, we will sit in the locker room and talk. We’re all veteran people. We are so excited to finally be around a group of individuals and play the game we love with people we love, and I think that’s why we’re having such a special run.”
Liatu King shined for Notre Dame with a dominant offensive showing, piling up 17 points and 10 rebounds as she went 8-for-9 from the field.
Hannah Hidalgo scored 15 points as she went 9-for-12 from the free throw line and Olivia Miles had 10 points for the Fighting Irish.
