Tax deadline change: If you live in 1 of these 7 states, you don’t have to file taxes by April 15

Taxpayers in seven states – including Alabama – will have more time to file taxes this year.

The changes are due to the Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster declaration related to Hurricane Helene that hit the southeast in September 2024.

Instead of April 15, the new deadline is May 1.

Taxpayers in these states and counties are given the extension automatically and do not have to file for extra time.

The extension covers individual tax returns, partnerships and S Corporations, quarterly estimates tax payments and corporate and fiduciary tax actions.

Can you get an extension after May 1?

Anyone who wants a tax filing extension beyond May 1 for tax year 2024 can get it but they have to request extra time. The extension does not give people more time to pay.

Regular filers can submit an extension request electronically but people covered by disaster-area declarations have to submit a paper form.

The deadline to submit an extension request is May 1.
