Tax deadline 2023 is tomorrow: How to file for an extension with the IRS

If you’re a last-minute tax filer, it’s time to get busy.

The filing deadline to submit 2022 tax returns or file an extension to file and pay any taxes owed is Tuesday, April 18 for most taxpayers. There are some exceptions for storm victims who will have until October to file their returns.

The change from the traditional April 15 deadline has to do with Emancipation Day, a holiday that celebrates the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. By federal law, Washington D.C. holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way as federal holidays. April 15 is a Saturday and Emancipation Day falls on Monday, April 17th, moving the tax deadline to Tuesday, April 18.

How to file for an extension with the IRS

If the tax day deadline has gotten here quicker than you planned, you can file an extension on your return. It’s important to keep in mind, however, an extension of time to file does not give you more time to pay your taxes; you should still estimate and pay any taxes owed by your regular deadline to avoid possible penalties.

You can use IRS Free File to electronically submit a tax-filing extension and that will push your deadline back to Oct. 16, 2023. If you can’t pay the full amount owed, you can make installment payment to the IRS. You can see more on that here.
