Target of Alabama interstate shootout that killed teen arrested; thought ‘whole thing was a joke,’ sheriff says

The intended target of a deadly shootout on Interstate 165 Monday north of Mobile remains the only person arrested from the incident, and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department is requesting help from the public on locating the killer.

T’Marvin Jones, 18, was identified Wednesday as the intended target, and was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.

He was listed as an inmate at the Mobile Metro Jail on Thursday. Authorities have said that Jones is refusing to provide any information about the shooter, and has declined to assist authorities in the investigation.

“He was just laughing and thought the whole thing was a joke,” Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said.

The victims in the shootout – a 15-year-old girl, who was killed, and a 9-year-old boy – are both related to Jones. The 9-year-old, who remained hospitalized Thursday and is in stable condition, is Jones’ brother. The 15-year-old girl, who authorities have not named because she is a minor, was his cousin.

All three were seated next to each other in the middle row of a SUV when the rolling shootout occurred sometime around 3 p.m. on I-165 near the Bay Branch Road exit.

It was the second time the 9-year-old boy had been shot during an incident in which the shooters were attempting to kill someone else.

Burch said that authorities have been in contact with the Alabama Department of Human Resources about protecting the boy from future harm.

The SUV’s driver has been described as Jones’s and the 9-year-old’s mother. Seated in the passenger side of the vehicle was the mother of the 15-year-old girl and a 4-year-old child who was in the backseat and was uninjured.

Burch has said that the driver – Jones’s mother – has also been uncooperative during interviews with authorities.

Burch has said that he believes the shootout was gang related, but declined to say which gangs were involved.

The agency is asking the public, if they have any information about the shootout, to contact them at 251-574-8633 or to leave information on their online Crime Tip form.
