Target joins Aldi, Publix, Kohls and more in one-day closure later this month

Some of the nation’s biggest retailers will be closing doors for 24 hours later this month.

Target, Kohl’s and Best Buy, as well as grocery stores Publix and Aldi, will be closed Sunday, April 25 for Easter. Warehouse clubs Sam’s and Costco will also be closed as will Macy’s, JCPenney, T.J. Maxx, Lowe’s, Michael’s and Marshalls.

The nation’s largest retailer, Walmart, will remain open, as will Dollar General, Home Depot, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, CVS and Walgreens. Some stores may have shortened holiday hours so check ahead before you go.

What determines the date of Easter?

The celebration of the Christian holiday recognizing the resurrection of Christ is known as a “moveable feast,” meaning the date changes each year. Unlike holidays such as Christmas or Halloween that fall on set times each year – Dec. 25 and Oct. 31, respectively – the Easter’s date is determined by the timing of the first full moon of spring.

Easter takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. The spring equinox occurred on March 20 this year with the first full moon after that date – the Paschal Full Moon – set for April 13, making Easter April 20.

The earliest day Easter can happen is March 22 but that won’t happen again until 2285. The latest Easter can take place is April 25, something that hasn’t occurred since 1943.

Over a 500-year period from 1600 to 2099, the dates Easter has most often been celebrated are on March 31 and April 16th.
