Tanner falls to Mississippi power Booneville 48-21

Zion Nunn ran for three touchdowns as Booneville (Miss.) beat Class 2A eighth-ranked Tanner 48-21 on Friday at Rip Swanner Stadium in Tanner.

Nunn scored from 2, 39 and 34 yards for the Blue Devils, ranked No. 6 in Mississippi Class 3A. Booneville (8-2) led 27-14 at halftime in its fourth straight win.

Booneville quarterback Noah Gillon, a junior with offers from Troy and Austin Peay, threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tre Miller. Gillon also scored on a 15-yard run, Tapp Fraiser had a 34-yard touchdown run and Dekiaden Gaston scored on a 16-yarder.

Karl Parham threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Skylar Townsend for Tanner (7-3) and also scored on a 17-yard run. Tailan Hall added a 74-yard touchdown run.

The Rattlers didn’t punt, but turned the ball over on downs multiple times and had six other turnovers. Their win streak ended after seven games.

“We knew they were going to be extremely athletic,” Booneville coach Scott Brown said. “Coach (Oscar) Bonds does a great job here. We just came out, we wanted to throw the ball some. We were able to throw it. We wanted to be balanced with the throw and the run and challenged our offensive line to block a really good defensive front.

“My assistant coaches did a fantastic job of preparing us this week. I can’t say enough about them.”

Play of the game: Gaston returned the opening kickoff 63 yards to the Tanner 10 and Nunn scored from the 2 three plays later. Tanner muffed the ensuing kickoff. Two plays later, Nunn scored from the 39. Parker Pounders kicked the extra point for a 14-0 lead at 9:38 in the first quarter.

Stat sheet: Booneville – Nunn had 22 carries for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Fraiser had two carries for 91 yards and a touchdown. Gillon ran for a touchdown and completed 8-of-13 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. Defensive end Jayden Williams had seven tackles with two sacks. Tanner – Parham had a touchdown pass and seven carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.

By the numbers: 435 – Booneville total yards with 378 rushing and 57 passing. 465 – Tanner total yards with 208 rushing and 257 passing. 6 – Tanner turnovers on four interceptions and two fumbles. 1 – Booneville win in one game against Tanner all-time.

Game ball: Nunn, a junior running back/safety, dragged defenders for extra yardage on many of his carries.

Next week: Booneville will host Amanda Elzy in the Mississippi 3A playoffs. After an open week, Tanner will host Lamar County in the 2A first round.
