Tannehill State Park’s historic General Store destroyed in predawn fire

A predawn fire at Tannehill State Park destroyed the General Store.

Green Pond Fire Chief Joseph Hall said firefighters responded to the park at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday after a camper leaving for work spotted the blaze and called 911.

When firefighters arrived, the store was well involved. McCalla Fire also responded.

Crews extinguished the fire and made sure the surrounding areas were safe, Hall said.

No one was injured.

Hall said the store, a popular landmark at the park, was obviously closed at the time of the fire and no one had been there since late Tuesday.

The cause has not yet been determined. The store is a total loss.

The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office is responding to lead the investigation.
