A TV miniseries about one of the most famous couples in country music — Tammy Wynette and George Jones — is set for release later this year by the Paramount Network.

Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon star in “George & Tammy,” a six-episode series that delves into the duo’s rocky relationship and the iconic music they performed, together and separately.

“About a year ago we were in music rehearsals, learning some of George Jones and Tammy Wynette’s biggest hits,” Chastain said on Friday via Twitter. “Nerves were high, emotions were higher as we tried to channel these two country legends. A year has passed and we can finally start to share their story with you.”

In her tweets, Chastain included several photos of herself and Shannon playing Wynette and Jones — on stage, in the studio and during more private moments.

According to a report by Vanity Fair, Chastain has been attached to the project since 2011. She’s also one of the producers, via her Freckle Films company.

“I was really moved by the love story between them — I started to listen to the music and understood that they were always singing to each other,” Chastain told the magazine. “They were both a huge part of each other’s lives.”

Wynette (1942-1998) was born in a doctor’s office in Red Bay, Alabama, and grew up in nearby Itawamba County, Mississippi. As a result, she claimed both states as her home. (”My top half comes from Mississippi and my bottom half from Alabama,” Wynette was known to say.)

As a hairdresser in Midfield during the early 1960s, Wynette received her first break by appearing on “The Country Boy Eddie Show,” a variety series that aired mornings on Birmingham’s WBRC-TV.

Wynette then headed to Nashville in search of more fame, signing a recording contract and charting with the 1967 single, “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad.” She married Jones — a talented and volatile country star who earned the nicknames “Possum” and “No Show Jones”– in 1969. Their marriage, a tumultuous affair, lasted until 1975.

As duet partners, Wynette and Jones released nine studio albums and more than a dozen successful singles such as “Golden Ring,” “We’re Gonna Hold On,” “Two Story House,” “Near You” and “(We’re Not) the Jet Set.” It’s unclear if “George & Tammy” will delve into Wynette’s early years in Alabama, or if the miniseries will focus exclusively on her time with Jones as country royalty.

According to Vanity Fair, Chastain and Shannon trained with a vocal coach for the miniseries and performed all the songs for “George & Tammy.”

“George Jones is, to my ear, one of the finest singers I’ve ever heard in my life,” Shannon told Vanity Fair. “It’s obviously a fool’s errand to try to completely emulate that — that’s one of the reasons he’s legendary, is that there will never be another one like him.”

The cast includes Alabama native Walton Goggins, known for his work in “Justified,” “The Righteous Gemstones,” “Sons of Anarchy” and more). Steve Zahn, Kelly McCormack, Katy Mixon and David Wilson Barnes, also appear in the miniseries.

A specific air date hasn’t been announced for “George & Tammy,” created by Abe Sylvia and directed by John Hillcoat.
