Weather enthusiasiasts will have a chance to see the National Weather Service from the inside out on Saturday.

The National Weather Service’s Birmingham office plans to host an open house on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The weather service office, originally based in the city of Birmingham, is now located south of the city in Calera at the Shelby County Airport just off Interstate 65. It has been in that location since 1993.

The weather service plans to offer tours of the forecast office and a chance to meet the staff during Saturday’s open house.

Emergency vehicles from local fire departments and law enforcement will also be available to see up close, and local TV meteorologists will also be on hand with their storm-chase vehicles.

There will also be food trucks, trick or treating and other activities for the kids and a chance to help launch a weather balloon (scheduled for noon), according to the weather service.

The event is free and open to all.

The weather service office is located at 465 Weathervane Road in Calera.
