Syracuse fires football coach Dino Babers after 8 seasons
Syracuse has fired eighth-year football coach Dino Babers, a day after the Orange lost 31-22 to Georgia Tech to fall to 5-6 this season.
Babers went 41-55 at Syracuse, with just two winning seasons and two postseason berths. The Orange went 10-3 and won a bowl game in 2018, but never won more than seven games in any other season.
“I appreciate everything Dino, his wife Susan, and their family have done over the last eight years for Syracuse athletics, Syracuse University and most importantly, our student-athletes,” Syracuse athletics director John Wildhack said. “Thanks to Dino’s leadership, our student-athletes have performed at the highest levels in the classroom, have dedicated countless hours to supporting our communities and have gone on to achieve great success, both professionally and personally.
“As we embark on a change in leadership at the helm of Syracuse football, on behalf of Syracuse University I thank Coach Babers for his leadership, character and dedication, and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
The 62-year-old Babers was also head coach at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, where he went a combined 37-16 from 2012-15 and finished in first place in his division every season. He has also been an offensive coordinator or position coach at Arizona, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Baylor in a four-decade coaching career.
Tight end coach Nunzio Campanile will serve as Syracuse interim coach for the regular-season finale against Wake Forest. The Orange would be bowl-eligible with a win.
Babers’ dismissal means there are now six FBS head-coaching openings, along with Michigan State, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, San Diego State and Boise State. Northwestern has filled its opening already, elevating interim coach David Braun to the permanent job last week.
