Sylacauga police officer hit by SUV in elementary school drop-off line

A Sylacauga police officer was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning while on his post as a crossing guard at Pinecrest Elementary School.

Officer Chris Wykoff was struck by a 58-year-old who was dropping children off at the school. She was driving a Dodge Durango.

Wykoff, a 21-year veteran of the department, was transported by ambulance to Coosa Valey Medical Center. He was treated and released, said Chief Kelley Johnson.

“Because of the accident, the Sylacauga Police Department and the Sylacauga Board of Education will be discussing ways that might make the process of dropping off and picking up students safer for the public and the officers working traffic control,” Johnson said, “not only in this school zone but the other school zones throughout the city.”
