Suspicious package at Katie Britt’s house later deemed safe

The FBI responded to the Montgomery home of U.S. Sen. Katie Britt to investigate a suspicious package that was later declared safe, the senator said.

Britt is recovering at home after experiencing sudden facial numbness late last month that doctors believe was caused by a post-viral infection.

“Earlier today, a suspicious package was found at my home in Montgomery. The U.S. Capitol Police and the Montgomery Police Department were contacted and they quickly coordinated a response,” Britt said in a statement sent to AL.com. “After working the scene, the FBI and [explosive ordnance disposal] team cleared the package and declared it safe for my family and me to return home. Wesley and I want to thank the local and federal authorities involved for their prompt, professional response and their swift action to ensure the security of our family and community.”

Later Tuesday, a suspicious powder was reported at the Alabama Supreme Court building in Montgomery, WSFA reported. A Montgomery police spokeswoman could not immediately be reached about whether authorities believe that incident was connected to the package discovered at Britt’s home.

The all-clear was also given for the powder, which was found inside mail opened in a secure, non-public portion of the building, and Alabama Supreme Court employees were able to return to work.
