Suspected serial shoplifters wanted for 3 Fairhope thefts in custody in Mississippi
Two women suspected of being part of an organized retail crime group are in custody in Mississippi, just days after police in Fairhope say they stole more than $5,600 in goods from three Publix stores.
According to the Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss., the two women were taken into custody last Saturday at an Academy Sports in D’Iberville, Miss. They had reportedly been in that store previously and suspected of stealing more than $5,000 worth of merchandise there.
Fairhope police said the women have been identified as Cristina Pantelica, 37, of Washington, and Alondra Badanac, 18, of Texas. Law enforcement in Mississippi, however, say the two women are Romanian born and have not provided any documentation to show they are in the U.S. legally.
Police in both Fairhope and Mississippi say the women are being investigated as part of an organized theft ring which originated in California. Fairhope police said they are collaborating with multiple agencies on the investigation and warrants have been issued for their arrests in connection with the Fairhope thefts.
Pantelica and Badanac were both booked into the Harrison County Adult Detention Center under $100,000 bond. They will not be allowed to post bond, however, until U.S. Immigration & Customs investigates their immigration status.
