Suspect who allegedly shot his way into Birmingham apartment building arrested

The suspect who allegedly shot his way into a Birmingham apartment building before engaging in a standoff with police has been jailed on burglary and other charges, authorities said Wednesday night.

Charles McCallum IV, 35, of Birmingham, is being held on $105,000 bond in the Jefferson County jail on charges of burglary, criminal mischief and discharging a firearm into an occupied building/dwelling, police said.

Birmingham police were dispatched Tuesday to a report of an active shooter at Episcopal Place at 1112 26th Street in Southside. Episcopal Place is a nonprofit that provides affordable housing for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Birmingham police received the first call at 7:52 a.m. The suspect was taken into custody shortly after 8:30 a.m.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said South Precinct officers arrived on the scene and found the suspect – a middle-aged man – had “violently” entered the facility by shooting his way inside. He entered the building through a back, locked entrance.

“To gain access he shot the windows out and was able to enter,’’ he said, “as we’ve seen in several scenarios across the nation.”

As officers approached the suspect, they heard more shots fired, he said. They saw damage to the a ceiling on the first floor of the apartment building at which point they determined he was in the ceiling.

“Our officers were able to maintain a line of communication,’’ Fitzgerald said. “The dispatcher placed an emergency radio traffic alert to get all available officers here.”

Officers continued to communicate with the suspect as more officers were deployed into the facility.

Fitzgerald said the officers were able to convince the suspect into surrendering in the building’s library.

A motive had not yet been disclosed, but Fitzgerald confirmed police radio communications that the suspect possibly has a history of mental issues.

The entire incident took place on the first floor of the eight-story building. Police were about to prepare to evacuate residents when the suspect was taken into custody.

Fitzgerald said at least 10 shots were fired during the ordeal.

“We can’t say for certain he fired shots at our officers,’’ he said, “but we know once our officers were on the scene, he did discharge his firearm.”

The man, police said, was armed with a handgun.

“A very violent situation ended peacefully thanks to our officers and the staff at Episcopal Place,’’ he said.

“Regardless of the motive,’’ Fitzgerald said, “this situation could have been horrible.”

Episcopal Place released this statement:

“Episcopal Place Apartments is Independent Affordable Housing. This morning, on January 9, 2024, an armed-individual broke-in to Episcopal Place Apartments. We do not have any specific information regarding the identity of the individual, but we do not believe them to be a resident of the community or associated with any resident of the community.

We do know the individual gained access to the Community by breaking the glass out of a secured access, sliding glass door. The individual then climbed through the broken glass to enter the community’s common area room and then proceeded to barricade themselves in the dropped ceiling of the adjoining serving kitchen.

Episcopal Place Apartments Community Manager, Tim Blanton was performing his standard opening activities, at approximately 7:30am, when he observed the damage to the sliding glass door and was subsequently confronted by the individual in the serving kitchen. The building management team immediately contacted 911 to inform them that an armed individual had broken into the Community. The Birmingham Police Department responded to the scene and was able to apprehend the individual without any injury to anyone. Residents were notified to shelter-in-place for the duration of this situation.

We will continue to cooperate with the Birmingham Police Department in any way possible as they conduct their investigation and complete their case against this individual. We have already provided BPD with security camera footage of the entire incident to aid in their investigation.

We are deeply grateful to the Birmingham Police Department for their swift action in mitigating this situation. Their actions and bravery, as well as the action and bravery of our on-site management, team are commendable. We would like to remind our residents to always remain vigilant about their surroundings and always report any suspicious activity immediately.

While the building does have secured-entry FOB systems at every door, we will be contacting third-parties to evaluate any other adjustments that we could possibly make to ensure the continued safety and security of our residents, which is our top priority.”
