Suspect shot by car owner during vehicle theft in Shelby County

A suspected car thief was shot by the vehicle owner during an afternoon robbery in Shelby County.

Sheriff’s deputies responded about 1 p.m. Wednesday to the 500 block of Phillips Drive in Vincent on a report of a robbery, said Capt. Mark Bishop.

The victim told deputies his vehicle was taken by a male and a female. The owner told them he fired his weapon during the incident.

A description of the stolen vehicle was sent to area law enforcement agencies. An off-duty Harpersville police officer spotted the vehicle about 20 minutes later at the MAPCO gas station on U.S. 280.

Childersburg police officer and Talladega County sheriff’s deputies assisted with detaining a male and female that matched the description of those involved.

The male suspect had sustained a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in Birmingham.

Bishop said the man’s injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who has additional information is asked to call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at 205‐670‐6000 or Crime Stoppers at 205‐254‐7777.
