Suspect kills self after chase, standoff with Alabama officers, authorities say
A suspect wanted on multiple felony warrants in north Alabama fatally shot himself Tuesday afternoon after a brief standoff with sheriff’s deputies and a state trooper who tried to pull over his vehicle, authorities said.
The suspect, who was not publicly identified, led Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies and the trooper on a chase through Waterloo after fleeing from authorities in two towns before coming to a stop on Cherokee County Road 89, said Sheriff Jeff Shaver.
The armed suspect refused to exit his vehicle, Shaver said.
After what Shaver described as a brief standoff, the suspect shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics Critical Incident Response Team was called to the scene to conduct an investigation, which is part of normal protocol, said Chief Deputy Josh Summerford.
The Cherokee County coroner is also investigating the death.
