Suspect jailed in killing of man who was found shot next to his dog in burning Birmingham home

A suspect has been charged in the 2023 shooting death of a man who was found slain alongside his dog in his burning Birmingham home.

Jervontay Marques Traylor, 22, of Birmingham, is charged with capital murder during a robbery in the killing of 45-year-old Deshawn Kahill Murphy, according to court records made public Tuesday.

The deadly shooting happened Nov. 20 at 4328 Willard Avenue S.W.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and Birmingham police responded about 12:15 p.m. that Monday to a blaze at the home.

As firefighters entered the house, they found Murphy and a dog unresponsive just inside the front door. Both had been shot and were pronounced dead on the scene at 1:23 p.m.

Police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said at the time a friend of the victim was sitting outside the house in a vehicle. An unknown man fired shots at the friend and the friend then fled the location on foot.

The friend sustained a gunshot wound to side and was taken to the hospital.

Charging documents state Murphy was killed while Traylor was in the course of committing a theft of an undisclosed amount of money.

Traylor also faces unrelated charges of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, criminal trespassing, and obstruction of justice in St. Clair County. He was also arrested last week on those charges, court records show.

Traylor was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Friday. He is being held without bond.
