Suspect indicted in 2020 deadly drive-by shooting in Birmingham’s Southtown community

A 32-year-old man has been indicted in the fatal shooting of another man in Birmingham more than three years ago.

A Jefferson County grand jury last month returned a capital murder indictment again Ronald Lavance Steen in the July 15, 2020, shooting death of 23-year-old Antonio Jermell Jackson. The indictment against Steen was made public today.

Jackson was shot in the 2300 block of Ninth Court South shortly after 6:30 p.m. that Wednesday. Jackson was found on the floor near the front of a residence in the Southtown public housing community.

He was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital early the following morning.

Records state Jackson was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Steen was initially arrested in 2020. At the time his arrest was announced, he was in the Shelby County Jail on unrelated charges.

Steen earlier this year pleaded guilty to the charges in Shelby County – trafficking opium – and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with three years to serve.

A trial date has not yet been set in the capital murder case.

He remains held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
