A 25-year-old suspect has been indicted in a March shootout in southwest Birmingham that left another man dead.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Sederius Skanes on a charge of murder in the March 28 shooting death of 37-year-old Sidney Cornell Saxton. The indictment was issued Nov. 16 and made public Wednesday after Skanes had been served with the warrant.

Skanes has been held in the Jefferson County Jail since July on unrelated charges.

The deadly shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. that Tuesday outside of 513 12th Street S.W.

The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – alerted Birmingham police to nearly 40 rounds fired in an area police had been called to more than once in recent days.

Those shots rang out in the 500 block of 12th Street S.W. and nearby Fulton Avenue, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.  When they ended, Saxton was dead on the sidewalk.

Fitzgerald said at the time that based on Shot Spotter data and calls to 911, the victim was killed in a shootout. There were shell casings around Saxton which led investigators to believe the victim either fired shots or was preparing to do so when he was gunned down.

A weapon was recovered from the victim.

“Officers pointed out there have been problems in this area with groups shooting back and forth with one another,’’ Fitzgerald said at the time. “The occupants have been feuding with a different group.”

A trial date has not yet been set.
