Suspect in fatal Jefferson County stabbing possibly committed other crimes before 2 killed in Louisiana shooting, police say

The Jefferson County fugitive captured in Louisiana following a deadly gas station robbery and shootout with police that left two people dead may have committed more crimes during his time on the run.

Bossier City Police Chief Daniel Haugen on Wednesday said 50-year-old Cortrell Montesez Burks, initially wanted in Jefferson County for the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend and in Birmingham for the shooting of four people, possibly carried out other crimes in between the states as he traveled along Interstate 20.

“We don’t know led him to Bossier City from Birmingham, Alabama, there’s a lot of hearsay, a lot of investigation into that,’’ Haugen said at a press conference.

“We do know he left Birmingham and we do know Bossier City was his last stop.”

Asked if there were other violent acts between Alabama and Louisiana, the chief said, “That’s what we’re hearing. It’s all part of the investigation.”

In Alabama, Burks, a contract truck driver, is charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his longtime girlfriend, 40-year-old Erica Shontea Williams. Birmingham police have not yet announced charges against Burks in the wounding of four people, which happened at the home of Williams’ mother.

In Louisiana, jail records list his charges as two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery and three counts of first-degree attempted murder.

Haugen said Burks will remain in Louisiana until all of his charges there have gone through court system. That means it will likely be years before Burks is extradited to Alabama.

Bossier City spokesman Louis Johnson provided more detail about what happened in that city on Tuesday.

He said officers responded to a call of shots fired at a Valero gas station on Industrial Drive at Interstate 20. The 911 call was made by employees of a restaurant adjacent to the convenience store.

“They heard the shots, made the call,’’ Johnson said.

“Bossier City Police Department responded and did they ever respond. They arrived on scene in exactly one minute and 33 seconds,’’ Johnson said. “We are certain that quick response time is what saved lives. Can you imagine what it would have been like if that person had been able to be longer without law enforcement?”

Johnson said Burks had gone into the Valero with the motive of robbery. Once inside, Burks is accused of fatally shooting a 47-year-old customer and the 36-year-old store clerk.

A third person – described as a bystander – was critically wounded, but additional information about that victim were not made public.

Officers arrived on the scene, Johnson said, and immediately took fire.

Officer Kenny Gallon, a seven-year veteran on the force – was struck in the chin, the shoulder and both legs.

“The impact rendered him unconscious,’’ Johnson said. “Another officer was on scene and that officer was able to keep him protected. “

Another officer applied a tourniquet to the surviving civilian gunshot victim, who had been struck in the femoral artery. “That stopped the bleeding and literally saved his life,’’ Johnson said.

Burks fled the scene to the nearby Le Bossier hotel. Johnson said the manager at the hotel had heard the gunshots and locked the door, which prevent Burks from taking refuge in there.

“He was unable to make entry and do further harm,’’ Johnson said.

Burks was then taken into custody unharmed.

Williams was found stabbed to death about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to her home in the 300 block of 20th Avenue N.E. in the Center Point area on a welfare check.

Williams’ sister, Marva Birchfield, said she received a Facebook message Sunday from an acquaintance saying that Burks had said he had killed Williams.

Birchfield tried to call her sister, and then family went to her home and could get no answer at the door.

That’s when they called 911 and Williams was found dead on the scene.

Birchfield said another sister and three of her nieces were wounded in that shooting. One of the victims remains hospitalized and the other three have been released.

She said her sister and Burks had been in a relationship for 16 years. She only knows of one prior domestic incident, which happened in January when she said Burks choked Williams. No charges were filed.

Both Williams and Burks have a child apiece, but they did not have any children together.

Williams’ death has devastated her family.

“She was a sweet person. Everybody knew Erica was sweet,’’ Birchfield said. “She’d give you the shirt off her back.
