A third suspect has been taken into custody in the November beating death of a 47-year-old man who police say was held captive in a Montgomery hotel before he was killed.

Police on Tuesday announced the arrests of Jeffery Pruitt, 35, on capital murder during a kidnapping in the November 2022 slaying of Nakel Johnson.

Jonathan Hoover, 27, was arrested on the same charge earlier this month. Reginald Jones, 55, was taken into custody Jan. 10, said Maj. Saba Coleman.

Central Alabama Crime Stoppers said Tuesday a tip to the agency provided authorities with Pruitt’s location. The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force found Pruitt hiding in abandoned residence in Montgomery.

Once the task force arrived at the abandoned residence, Pruitt hid inside a kitchen cabinet, where he was quickly located and taken into custody.

That abandoned house was near a school.

Johnson’s body was found about 3:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the 2300 block of Boyd Springs Road in Lapine in unincorporated Montgomery County.

Charging documents against Hoover and Jones state that between Nov. 13 and Nov. 15, the suspects forcibly “took control” of Johnson in his hotel room at the Executive Inn on Mobile Highway, preventing him from leaving.

Johnson, records state, was beaten with multiple types of objects and stuffed inside the trunk of his own 2022 Toyota Corolla. The vehicle was then dumped on Boyd Springs Road and set on fire with Johnson still inside, “which all led to the murder of the victim,’’ according to the affidavit.

All three suspects are being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
