Suspect in deadly Alabama home invasion, kidnapping captured after chase with shots fired, police say
The suspect in a deadly home invasion in Lawrence County was taken into custody after reportedly firing shots at police officers during a chase.
Jordan Cesar Hernandez, 35, was captured Sunday afternoon.
The ordeal began early Saturday with a home invasion at 1557 County Road 245, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said Hernandez and 36-year-old Auburn Renee Moore, of New Hope, entered the home with the intent to commit a robbery. During the home invasion, Dustin Grimes was shot to death in his bedroom while trying to protect his wife.
The suspects, sheriff’s officials said, stole undisclosed items from the residence and kidnapped Grimes’ wife.
The kidnapping victim managed to escape her captors while they were trying to force her to withdraw money from an ATM in the East Lawrence area.
“Seeing the opportunity to escape, she ran for her life and found refuge in a nearby convenience store where she was able to call law enforcement,’’ according to a sheriff’s office press release.
Lawrence County deputies and Moulton police officers arrived at the home on County Road 245 where they discovered Dustin Grimes dead.
Hernandez and Moore were identified as the suspects. Authorities charged them with murder, robbery and kidnapping.
A third person was also involved, but detectives are not identifying that person for investigative purposes.
Moore was arrested Saturday night in Decatur and remains held in the Lawrence County Jail.
On Sunday afternoon, Decatur police officers attempted to stop a vehicle by Hernandez.
Hernandez, who lives in Decatur, failed to stop and led officers on a pursuit, said Decatur police spokeswoman Irene Cardenas-Martinez.
During the chase, authorities said, Hernandez fired multiple shots out the window of the vehicle towards officers.
Hernandez eventually crashed his vehicle and fled on foot into the woods east of Calvary Assembly on Alabama 20.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene including the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, the Huntsville Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the Alabama Department of Corrections K9 Unit.
According to the Alabama State Troopers, all lanes of Alabama 20 west of Interstate 65 were shut down while the manhunt was ongoing. The roadway was reopened by 4 p.m.
Hernandez was later located without further incident. In addition to the warrants from Lawrence County, he is also now charged with attempted murder for the shots fired at police.
He is being held without bond in the Limestone County Jail.
