Suspect ID’d in deputy-involved shooting in Baldwin County

The man shot and killed by a Baldwin County deputy Thursday has been identified as a 58-year-old Robertsdale man.

The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit on Friday identified the man as James Richard Pavlista, who was shot and killed by a deputy at a residence on Highway 90 in Robertsdale.

Authorities said he charged the deputy with a knife. The deputy initially attempted to stop Pavlista with a Taser, but when that proved unsuccessful, he shot Pavlista.

The deputy involved was uninjured and a second deputy arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting. The deputies attempted lifesaving measures on Pavlista, but he died at the scene.

Pavlista had active warrants for stalking, criminal mischief and trespassing.

The Baldwin County MCU will continue to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

Once that investigation is complete, the results will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
