Suspect charged with murder in March shooting death of man found on west Birmingham street

A suspect has been charged in the March shooting death of a man found slain on a west Birmingham street.

Javone Antione Gray, 32, is charged with murder in the March 21 slaying of 48-year-old Michael Kimbrough, according to court records made public Tuesday.

Gray was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Friday and remains held without bond.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 12:45 p.m. that Tuesday to the 5900 block of Jesse Owens Avenue, which intersects with Sugar Ray Drive.

When they arrived, they found Kimbrough unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at 1 p.m.

Investigators marked several shell casings near Kimbrough’s body.

The suspect is claiming self-defense.
