A suspect has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a Selma Police Department evidence technician.

Cordel Dewayne Tyus, 22, is charged with capital murder in the killing of 30-year-old Jamyron Hope, said Fourth Judicial Circuit District Attorney Robert Turner Jr.

Tyus, of Selma, was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Center at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, hours after Hope was found dead.

The suspect was set to appear in court Friday.

Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford said officers responded about 1 a.m. Wednesday to the 3400 block of Water Avenue on a report of a person shot.

When they arrived, they found Hope unresponsive on the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

“Please keep Evidence Tech. Hope’s family and the Selma Police Department in your thoughts and prayers,’’ Fulford previously said.

Charging documents against Tyus state he killed Hope with a Glock .40-caliber handgun during a theft of money from Hope.  No additional details were provided in the criminal complaint.

Turner described Hope as “a ray of hope in a dark society.”

“He took pride in his work,’’ Turner said. “He was a team player.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
