Suspect charged with capital murder, arson in fatal north Alabama fire

More than a month after a man was killed in a house fire in north Alabama, a suspect has been charged with capital murder and arson in connection with the incident, police announced Wednesday.

Moulton police and firefighters responded on the night of Jan. 6 to a single-family structure fire in the 700 block of Petty Street, said Police Chief Craig McKnight.

First responders on the scene found a “fully involved” fire with “large flames,” McKnight said.

Two firefighters made their way into the home through a back window, where they found the victim, Durman Ray McDaniel.

“Unfortunately, even though all life-saving measure were attempted, Mr. McDaniel was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the police chief said.

Based on statements made to firefighters by witnesses and bystanders at the scene, Moulton police and state fire marshals returned to the scene to investigate.

“It was determined the fire was purposely set, and therefore a deliberate act,” McKnight said.

The case involving 11 separate agencies is still ongoing, McKnight said, but one suspect was quickly developed by investigators.

On Wednesday afternoon, police arrested Posey Jerome Echols on charges of capital murder and two counts of first-degree arson, McKnight said.

Echols was already being held in the Lawrence County Jail on a probation violation when he was arrested on the charges related to the fatal fire.

He is being held without bond.

“We realize that we can never undo what has happened to Mr. McDaniel, but we do hope that this will bring closure and justice for his family,” the chief said.

More arrests and charges in the case may be forthcoming, he said.
