Suspect charged in weekend parking lot shooting at Tuscaloosa Academy Sports

A suspect has been charged in a New Year’s Eve shooting in the parking lot of Academy Sports and Outdoors in Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa police were dispatched to the Skyland Boulevard store at 6:57 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said the 43-year-old victim left the scene in a private vehicle while people were still calling 911. He was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

Based on the victim’s statement and video evidence, investigators obtained an attempted murder warrant for 23-year-old Kajairames Conner.

Conner was taken into custody Tuesday. He is being held without bond in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

Kennedy said the two men were acquaintances who had a prior argument and encountered each other at the store Sunday night.
