Suspect charged in separate slayings of 2 women in Birmingham who were shot, set on fire

Two women found shot to death more than a month apart in Birmingham – both of them set on fire and the other almost set on fire – are believed to have been killed by the same man, police said.

Birmingham police officials on Friday announced murder charges against Demarchies Mincey, 25, in the April slaying of Ariel Jones and the June killing of Jermiera Fowler.

He is charged with capital murder in Jones’ slaying. He is charged with murder and abuse of corpse in Fowler’s death.

Mincey is jailed in Georgia on unrelated charges of aggravated assault, first-degree cruelty to children, and battery.

Birmingham police Chief Scott Thurmond said detectives on June 12 obtained the warrants against Mincey in Fowler’s slaying. He was arrested in Georgia by U.S. Marshals on June 22.

While investigating Mincey they linked him to Jones’ death as well, the chief said. They then obtained the capital murder warrant against him.

Thurmond said he could not say how they identified Mincey as the suspect in either case.

While investigating, identified him as suspect in jones

“Currently the only commonality in these cases is that both victims are female and they were both shot,’’ Thurmond said.

The chief said he does not believe the women knew each other or knew Mincey. The suspect has refused to answer Birmingham investigators’ questions and instead asked for a lawyer.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Ariel Jones and Jermiera Fowler as they deal with the senseless loss of these two young woman and we hope this arrest brings them one step closer to finding closure,’’ Thurmond said.

.He said there is no evidence to describe Mincey as a serial killer, investigators have no linked him to any other deaths in Birmingham. A motive in their deaths has not been released.
